What is a Findopedia?
The Findopedia began with a simple problem…
The more time I spent exploring the coastline, the more questions I seemed to collect. Sometimes the question begins with a shell. Other times it's a feather, a fish, a seed pod or a creature I've never noticed before.
Last week I spotted a sea snake and immediately found myself wondering….How long can it hold its breath? A question like that can send me down a rabbit hole of research, discoveries and unexpected facts.
That's how the Findopedia was born.
Part field guide, part collection and part curiosity cabinet, it's a place to document not only the things I find, but the questions they inspire. Every entry begins with observation! A shell washed ashore, an unfamiliar species, interesting patterns or question worth investigating.
From there, I research, record and collect what I learn. The goal isn't to become an expert on everything…It's simply to stay curious, to notice more, to ask questions, and to create a record of the discoveries made along the way.
One of the things I love most about using an indexed logbook is that it allows me to revisit those discoveries months or even years later. A question asked on a beach walk today might connect to something entirely different in the future.
Instead of disappearing into a search engine and being forgotten, those observations become part of a growing collection of notes, stories and discoveries.
In many ways, the Findopedia is less about finding answers and more about paying attention.
Because the coastline is full of remarkable things….you just have to be curious enough to notice them.
