Archivist Matches | The Whale

A whale, out in the deep blue. A beautiful little matchbox for anyone who has ever been drawn to the things that live beneath the surface.

This lovely square matchbox is from British makers Archivist Gallery, known for their beautifully illustrated, letterpress-printed matchboxes. The whale illustration has that wonderful old-world natural history feeling that makes it look just as good sitting on a shelf as it does beside a candle.

Inside are 125 long safety matches, each 100mm, with natural wooden stems and blue tips.

They're useful, of course, but that's not really why I chose them for Daughter of the Drift. They're the kind of everyday object that makes you stop for a second. Something practical that has been made beautifully enough to become part of the room.

Keep them beside your candles, take them camping, leave them on the coffee table or give them to someone who loves the ocean, old illustrations and beautiful little things.
